We open our Summer Organ Concert series with Peter Szeibel of Dubuque. Concerts featuring a different guest musician will be held every Wednesday (except July 24) throughout June, July, and August. Szeibel began playing organ for church services at age 12 in New York City, where he studied piano and organ at the precollege division of the Juilliard School. He has served as church organist for numerous denominations and composed works for organ, harpsichord, piano, and voice. Szeibel has given recitals in New York, the Midwest, and Hungary. He studied organ with Jon Gillock, who is one of today’s leading interpreters of the organ music of Olivier Messiaen. Szeibel also plays the harpsichord and enjoys the wide variety of classical repertoire these two instruments offer, spanning over 400 years of music, including works by William Byrd, Frescobaldi, Sweelinck, Buxtehude, J. S. Michael Gilbertson and the guest artists of ChamberFest DBQ will take the stage on June 6 in Clarke University’s Jansen Music Hall for one of the Dubuque’s most unique and anticipated concerts. Presented by Northeast Iowa School of Music, ChamberFest DBQ is led by Dubuque native and NISOM alumnus Michael Gilbertson as the festival’s artistic director. Now an award-winning composer and faculty member at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Gilbertson was recently a finalist in the 2018 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his Quartet. For this benefit concert in support of NISOM, Gilbertson has invited a select group of musicians from across the country to join him to perform for Dubuque audiences every June since 2009. This year’s concert will feature another varied, virtuosic program of chamber music including Gilbertson’s Quartet and special compositions by NISOM founder Tracey Rush. Guest artists include guitarist Jiji, violinist Hanah Stuart Precourt, violinist Wesley Precourt, pianist David Fung, cellist and Dubuque native Bridget Pasker, and violist Danielle Wiebe. Following the concert, mingle with the performers during a champagne and dessert reception.
